PRP Redundancy module for high availability in energy systems


Phoenix Contact provides products for the secure automation of power systems by building a robust network infrastructure according to IEC 61850-3/IEEE 1613.

The Ethernet redundancy modules (FL RED 2003E PRP and FL RED 2001E PRP 2LC) enable parallel redundancy without switch-over time and without packet loss in case of failure. They ensure high network availability under the harshest electromagnetic, electrostatic and climatic conditions. Thus the involvement of non-PRP-enabled devices in parallel networks is ensured guaranteeing maximum availability.

The Ethernet redundancy modules FL RED 2003E PRP and FL RED 2001E PRP 2LC have been developed in cooperation with NetModule.


NetModule offers development services for complete Embedded Systems. Combined with the special expertise in networking technologies, in particular the redundancy protocol IEC 62439-3, a high-quality solution as well as a fast market entry was guaranteed.

NetModule took over the following tasks within the project:

  • Integrate NetModule's own IEC 62439-3 IP-Core in Xilinx® Zynq
  • Provision the Xilinx® Zynq BSP
  • Create the web-based configuration interface
  • Schematic Review


NetModule's modular IP-Core according to IEC 62439-3 serves as the heart of the redundancy modules. The IP-Core is integrated in a Xilinx® Zynq-7000™ family device and provides realtime packet transfer (wire-speed) for all packet lengths. Management functions are implemented in software and can thus be extended via a software update. This ensures maximum flexibility and a future proof solution.
